Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
Founded in 1967, the Museum of Local Lore of the city of Rubtsovsk tells about the life of the city in various historical periods.
The Rubtsovsk Museum of Local Lore plays a special role in preserving historical memory and cultural traditions for both local residents and all who come to Altai.
The Art Gallery is one of the main attractions of our city. Over the years, the gallery has evolved from a branch of the State Art Museum of the Altai Krai to a modern independent exhibition complex, which annually receives about 20,000 visitors. Currently, it is logical to consider the art gallery as a gallery with the widest possible range of activities. The main motive here is "communication within the gallery walls" at different levels for different age categories of viewers: from art specialists to the general public. The art gallery has firmly occupied its niche among the cultural institutions of the city.
The history of the art gallery begins in 1989, when it was decided to open an art gallery in the premises at 133 Lenin Ave., where the city library was previously located. At that time, more than 20 artists worked sporadically in Rubtsovsk, exhibiting their works in various cultural institutions. It was only with the opening of the gallery that the artists got their own home, where they are always welcome, always helped and listened to. And most importantly, the opportunity arose to regularly hold art exhibitions and implement joint programs and projects.
The creative life of the gallery from 1990 to 2000 was very rich. Traveling exhibitions, personal exhibitions of artists from the city of Rubtsovsk and the Altai Krai, group exhibitions; summer plein-airs.
The years 1997-2000 were the most difficult in the gallery's work. The closure of the national art studio, and then the death of the city's oldest artist, Vladislav Vladimirovich Tikhonov, lack of funding, and many other current issues had to be solved by the new director, Valery Sergeevich Sverdlov.
Fyodor Chaliapin said: "Art can experience times of decline, but it is eternal, like life itself." And it's true. Life does not stand still. The gallery continued its work: it received visitors, held exhibitions, and bit by bit collected the gallery's funds.
The year 2001 became a starting point in the gallery's recent history. The art gallery found a new home. After a major renovation of the premises at 15 Kalinina St., the art gallery reopened its doors to visitors. In the same year, by a resolution of the city council of deputies, the art gallery of the city of Rubtsovsk was named after Vladislav Vladimirovich Tikhonov, an honorary citizen of the city, the oldest artist, a man of rare talent, exceptional spiritual qualities, and wholly devoted to art. And for many artists, Vladislav Vladimirovich was a teacher, a critic, and a mentor. Today, his best works are kept in the funds of the art gallery, and his name is inscribed in golden letters in the history of fine art of the city of Rubtsovsk and the Altai Krai.
The most important component of the museum's collection are materials about the participants of the Great Patriotic War, donated by veterans and their relatives. This includes more than two hundred military letters and postcards, old books, newspapers, documentary evidence, and photographs.
The museum's archaeological department is interesting, including ancient tools, ceramic products, and the remains of ancient animals. The natural science collection tells about the local flora, fauna, and the minerals that the region is rich in.
In the first years (1990-1995), the main funds of the gallery were formed. Canvases by artists from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Baku, and many other Russian cities were acquired. Many works were donated by the authors after their solo exhibitions in the gallery. Thanks to the efforts of the first director of the institution, Viktor Serafimovich Stepin, and the head of the Department of Culture, Yuri Grigorievich Shatilov, a collection of Russian fine art of the 20th century of 500 units was formed.
Currently, the funds of the art gallery consist of 1,190 items, of which 531 are paintings, 565 are graphics, 93 are items of applied art, daily life, and ethnography, and 1 is a sculpture.
