Brief historical background, collections and exhibitions of the museum
The foundation of the Museum of Stone in Maima village – a collection of minerals from the Altai Geophysical Expedition – represents the wealth of Russia's subsoil and the diversity of Altai's mineral resources.
The Altai Geophysical Expedition was based in Maima from 1955. Geologists and geophysicists traveled hundreds of kilometers of routes across Altai and collected tens of thousands of samples and specimens. The most interesting, unusual, and outlandish specimens were collected and stored in the expedition's museum. Enthusiasts of the museum multiplied and preserved the mineral collection for half a century.
Today, the Museum of Stone is a source of local history information, a meeting place and memory lane for the older generation, a studio of traditional folk crafts, a gallery of Altai's pictorial art, and a place for creating books on the history of Maima village and Maiminsky District, as well as on geology and personalities.
Today, rocks, minerals, and products made from them are displayed in 22 showcases of the museum. An extensive library of specialized literature is preserved. The museum has unique exhibits: stromatolitic limestone with the imprint of simple algae, volcanic bombs and glass, remains of fossil animals, and fossils. Iron and manganese ores, polymetallic raw materials; mercury, tungsten, gold, silver, and cobalt ores; jewelry and ornamental stones and facing stones; cave decorations – stalactites and stalagmites; and talisman stones are presented.
